The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare released a report in early May 2019 that analysed 10,000 hospitalisations for cycling injuries over a 17 year period.
Most news reporting focused on the ‘rise of the MAMIL’ (Middle-Aged Man In Lycra) to explain the increase in injuries for men aged 45 and over which grew by nearly 500 per cent from 728 to 4120, more than a third of all cases.
Fairfax reporting on the story quoted a cyclist and a public health academic that focused on the safety of the roads. The cyclist was quoted talking about choosing relatively safe infrastructure options.
